Wanda at Large was an American television sitcom series starring stand-up comedian Wanda Sykes. Sykes created the series alongside Bruce Helford, Les Firestein, and
Lance Crouther. This made Sykes the first black woman to create, write, produce, and star in their own series. The show aired for two seasons on the Fox network from
March 26 to November 7, 2003. Throughout the show, Sykes starred as Wanda Hawkins, a former government worker living her life in Washington D.C who decides to
become a stand-up comedian. Through her friend and segment producer Keith (Dale Godboldo), Wanda suddenly finds herself in the spotlight she has always craved
for, as she is tapped by WHDC-TV head Roger who hires her to come work for the station where she become a new editorial correspondent for the low-rated political
talk show called 'The Beltway Gang'. Here she shares her own rather big opinions and uses her razor-sharp commentary skills to skewer the city of Washington D.C for
all it's faults. She is immediately seen as unprofessional and inexperienced by the show's moderators, Bradley (Phil Morris) and Rita (Ann Magnuson), whose conservative politics without a
doubt quickly clash with Wanda's liberal views. While at home, Wanda must deal with her sister-in-law Jenny (Tammy Lauren), a widow who is raising two children, her niece Holly (Jurnee Smollett) and nephew Barris (Robert Bailey Jr.), whom Wanda constantly finds irritating. As the show progresses, Wanda begins to bond with her family and win over her colleagues, as well as with some hinted attraction to Bradley.
